Amarok: Slow, Annoying, and Insufficiently Resembling iTunes

  • I shouldn't have to pick which database back-end. I shouldn't need to know what a database is, or what a back-end is.
  • I shouldn't ever have to see a file path string in a user application. Seriously, /what/the/fuck/?
  • Sometimes I don't want to have to deal with The Playlist. It would be nice to just browse my own playlists and play songs right away, like iTunes. The (automatic) contents of "smart playlists" can't even be examined without adding them to The Playlist.
  • There's no reason for the "current song" row highlight to be so big, or to throb.
  • It should never skip the first few seconds of a track.
  • The "previous track" and "next track" buttons should always be available. The former should restart the currently-playing track, unless it's in the first few seconds and there's a previous track to go to. The latter should end the playlist if there's no next track. Just like iTunes.
  • All those weird left-hand-side tabs should be merged into a single hierarchy, just as they are in iTunes. The "Files" tab should not exist.
  • The "Playlists" hierarchy should not be categorised by playlist type. Instead, a single folder should be able to contain regular, smart and static playlists. Also, the folder icons don't need to be bright colours.
  • There's no reason for the drop-down menu to display the name and version of the product up the side.
  • None of the available KDE widget sets are all that good (I installed kcontrol). I settled for "Plastik". I've got the fonts, colours and icons more or less acceptable. But OMG is the interface slow to redraw.
  • It should not unexpectedly quit. If it does unexpectedly quit, it should not attempt to launch something called "kmail" which I don't have installed.
